Galal Yafai

Galal Yafai (* 11. December 1992 in Birmingham ) is a British boxer in the flyweight . He is 1.70 m tall and boxes in the right display . He is the younger brother of the two boxers Gamal and Khalid .

Career

In November 2015 he won the Golden Gong Tournament in Macedonia and in February 2016 the István Bocskai Tournament in Hungary. Also in February 2016, he made his debut for the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), defeating the experienced Mexican Joselito Velásquez of the Mexico Guerreros .

Although he had not yet won a national championship, he was surprisingly nominated for the European Olympic qualification in April 2016 in Samsun, Turkey . There he won the tournament with wins against Enver Amis from Romania (3: 0), Danil Platanovschi from Moldova (DQ), Samuel Carmona from Spain (3: 0) and Artur Hovhannisyan from Armenia (3: 0), making him the first British boxer to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. In the games themselves, however, he was eliminated in the second round against Joahnys Argilagos (1: 2).

He won the silver medal at the 2017 European Championships in Kharkiv and took part in the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Yuberjen Martínez .

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, he won the gold medal with a final victory over Amit Panghal . He won a bronze medal at the 2019 European Games in Minsk and was eliminated from Billal Bennama at the 2019 World Championships in Russia .
