Gamal Yafai (born August 4, 1991 in Birmingham ) is an English professional boxer of Yemeni descent in super bantamweight .
Amateur career
Gamal Yafai started boxing as a teenager with his brother Khalid Saeed Yafai, who was two years older than him. His younger brother Galal Yafai is also a boxer. He was a member of the Birmingham City Police ABC (Amateur Boxing Club) and was trained there by Frank O'Sullivan.
In 2007 he won the gold medal at the EU Cadet Championships in Porto Torres , a bronze medal at the European Cadet Championships in Siófok and the silver medal at the World Cadet Championships in Baku .
In 2009 he was the English flyweight champion and won international tournaments in Finland, Lithuania and Hungary. At the European Championships in Moscow in 2010 , he reached the bantamweight division against Vittorio Parrinello and John Joe Nevin, among others, in the semifinals, where he was eliminated with a bronze medal by just 2: 3 against Eduard Absalimow .
At the 2013 European Championships in Minsk, he lost 2-1 to Aram Avagjan in the round of 16 and failed against him at the 2013 World Championships in Almaty .
Professional career
Yafai made his professional debut on May 21, 2014. In March 2016, he won the Commonwealth Superbantamweight Championship by knockout against Bobby Jenkinson and defended the title unanimously against Josh Wale in July 2016. In May 2017 he became WBC International Champion after an early win against the undefeated Sean Davis.
In March 2018 he suffered his first loss as a professional when he lost to Gavin McDonnell by unanimous decision on points.
