Valentin Iremonger

Valentin Iremonger (born February 14, 1918 in Sandymount , County Dublin , † 1991 in Dublin ) was an Irish diplomat and poet.

Life

Iremonger was born in Sandymount near Dublin in 1918. He attended the Christian Brothers School on Dublin's Synge Street and then the Coláiste Mhuire , which is also run by the Christian Brothers. From 1938 to 1940 Iremonger attended the Abbey Theater School of Acting . He then worked as an actor and producer at Dublin's Abbey Theater and the Gate Theater until 1946 .

In 1946 Iremonger began working for the Irish Foreign Office . During his diplomatic career he was ambassador to Sweden , Norway and Finland from 1964 to 1968 , ambassador to India from 1968 to 1973, and from 1973 to 1979 ambassador to Luxembourg and finally from 1979 until his retirement in 1980 he was ambassador to Portugal .

In addition to his diplomatic career, Iremonger was also active as a writer. From 1949 to 1951 he was an editor for the poetry section of Envoy magazine . His poetry collection Reservations was also published here in 1950 . He has written articles and reviews for various Irish and British journals .

In 1949 he was editor of the “Faber Book of Contemporary Poetry” together with Robert Greacen . In 1962 he translated the novel Rothaí Mór an tSaoil by Micí Mac Gabhann from Irish into English under the title The Hard Road to Klondike . In 1964 he translated the novel Dialann Deoraí by Dónal Mac Amhlaigh under the title An Irish Navvy . As early as 1955, Iremonger had translated Rainer Maria Rilke 's Life of Mary into Irish under the title Beatha Mhuire .
