Aram Awagjan ( Armenian Արամ Ավագյան ; English Aram Avagyan * 18th January 1991 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Armenian professional boxer in the featherweight . He qualified in bantamweight for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Amateur career

The approximately 1.73 m tall left-hand boom began boxing in 2001 and competed in around 150 fights until 2015. He was a participant in the 2008 World Youth Championships in Guadalajara and the 2009 European Youth Championships in Szczecin . He celebrated his first major success by winning the silver medal at the first U22 European Championships in Kaliningrad in 2012 , when he was eliminated in the final against Vladimir Nikitin after victories against Dmitri Zhukov, Qais Ashfaq and Cavid Çələbiyev .

His attempt to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games in London failed at the European qualifying matches in Trabzon against Pavlo Ishchenko .

In 2013 he reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in Minsk with victories against Gamal Yafai and Samir Məmmədov , then lost to Mykola Butsenko and won a bronze medal. At the World Championships of the same year in Almaty , he defeated Gamal Yafai and Vittorio Parrinello before he was stopped in the round of 16 by the Cuban Robeisy Ramírez .

He also won a bronze medal at the 2015 European Championships in Samokow ; this time he failed in the semifinals to Qais Ashfaq, having previously beaten Matti Koota and Răzvan Andreiana . At the 2015 European Games in Baku and the 2015 World Championships in Doha , however, he remained medalless.

At the European Olympic qualification in 2016 in Samsun, he fought for third place and was thus eligible for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . After winning the preliminary round against Omar El-Hag and İbrahim Gökçek, he was defeated by Cavid Çələbiyev , but beat Mykola Butsenko in the fight for third place . At the Olympic Games he won the preliminary round against Arashi Morisaka from Japan, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Michael Conlan from Ireland.

Professional career

On December 18, 2016, he made his professional debut in Russia. On May 19, 2018, he won the WBC International Silver title . In September 2018 he boxed a draw against Yevgeny Smirnov and won against the undefeated Francisco Esparza in May 2019.
