Atagün Yalçınkaya (born December 14, 1986 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish boxer . At the age of 17 he won the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He also became the youngest Olympic medalist in Turkish sports history to date.

Boxing career

Atagün Yalçınkaya was seven-time Turkish champion, won the gold medal at the 2003 European Schoolchildren Championships in Rome and also the gold medal at the 2003 European Cadet Championships in Kaunas .

At the 2004 European Championships in Pula he was eliminated in the preliminary round against Pál Bedák and took part in the "Chowdhry Cup" in Baku , the European Olympic qualification tournament, where he defeated Kelvin de la Nieve , Heorhij Tschyhajew and Veaceslav Gojan , with which he himself qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . At the Olympics he defeated Jolly Katongole, Ceyhun Abiyev, Alfonso Pinto and the reigning European and World Champion Sergei Kasakow , before he lost to Yan Barthelemí in the final 16:21 and thus won the silver medal. For this success he was voted Turkish Sportsman of the Year at the Milliyet Sports Awards in 2004.

In 2005 he still won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Almería and the Ahmet Cömert Tournament in Istanbul by beating Samir Məmmədov in the final . At the 2005 World Championships in Mianyang , he defeated Andrzej Rżany , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Georgi Balakschin .

At the European Championships in 2006 in Plovdiv he was defeated in the preliminary round against Stewart Langley.

From March 2008 to December 2008 he boxed as a professional for the Arena Boxing Promotion under Ahmet Öner and won each of his four fights early.

Yalçınkaya is a graduate of Gazi Üniversitesi in Ankara and after his competitive career worked as a boxing trainer, among others at the Fenerbahçe SK sports club .
