Ahmet Cömert Tournament

The Ahmet Cömert Tournament (tr. Ahmet Cömert Boks Turnuvası ) is an international boxing tournament that has been held annually in the Turkish city of Istanbul since 1986 . It is named after the Turkish boxer, trainer and referee Ahmet Cömert (1926–1990).

Boxing takes place in ten weight classes under the rules of the AIBA World Amateur Association . Women's boxing has also been held since 2002. Elite men and women (adults) between the ages of 19 and 40 are eligible to participate. The tournament is divided into round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, with the two losers of the semi-finals in each weight class sharing third place.

In 1998 and 1999 it was both a European Championship qualification tournament and, in 1999, a qualification tournament for participation in the 2000 Olympic Games.

Among the most famous winners of the tournament so far have included Olympic champion and world champion like Francisc Vaştag , Giorgi Kandelaki , Sinan Samil Sam , Waldemar Font , Ramaz Paliani , O'tkirbek Haydarov , Hector Vinent , Ariel Hernández , Félix Savón , Birschan Schaqypow , bakhyt sarsekbayev , Zhang Xiaoping , Abbos Atoyev and Artur Beterbijew , as well as the later professional world champions Markus Beyer , Lucian Bute , Felix Sturm , Yuriorkis Gamboa , Ruslan Chagayev , Gennadi Golowkin and Carl Frampton .
