Kim Kwang-sun (born June 8, 1964 in Chunnahbokdo , South Korea ) is a former South Korean boxer who became Olympic flyweight champion in 1988 .

amateur

As an amateur, Kim won the World Cup tournament in Rome in 1983 . In 1984, Kim took in the light flyweight at the Olympic Games of Los Angeles in part, but had Lospech and lost in his first fight against the eventual winner Paul Gonzales . At the World Cup in Seoul 1985 he did not get beyond the semi-finals and at the Amateur World Championships 1986 in Reno he was eliminated again in the first tournament round, but won the Asian Games in Seoul.

In 1987 he won the World Cup tournament in Belgrade with a narrow final victory over 19-year-old Andreas Tews . At the Olympic Games in his home country, Kim was Olympic flyweight champion in 1988. He beat the American Arthur Johnson, the Bulgarian Serafim Todorow , Timofei Skryabin and in the final again Andreas Tews.

professional

In 1990 he turned professional. After only five fights, Kim faced Humberto González on June 7, 1992 for the WBC title. While in the lead, he lost in the twelfth and final lap due to a technical knockout. On July 17, 1993, he challenged WBC and IBF title holders Michael Carbajal , who had previously beaten González, and lost again prematurely, this time particularly spectacularly.

He then resigned with six wins and two losses.
