Hungary participated in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal with a delegation of 178 athletes (124 men and 54 women) in 109 competitions in 17 sports.

The Hungarian athletes won four gold, five silver and 13 bronze medals. In the medal table of the Games, Hungary placed tenth. Olympic champions were gymnast Zoltán Magyar on the pommel horse, javelin thrower Miklós Németh , foil fencer Ildikó Schwarczenberger and the men's water polo team. Silver went to the weightlifter György Kőszegi in the flyweight, the freestyle wrestler József Balla in the super heavyweight and the canoeists Zoltán Sztanity in a single kayak over 500 meters, Géza Csapó in a single kayak over 1000 meters and Anna Pfeffer and Klára Rajnai in a two- person kayak over 500 meters Meter. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the fencer Jenő Kamuti .
