Imre Földi [ ˈimrɛ ˈføldi ] (born May 8, 1938 in Kecskemét ; † April 23, 2017 in Tatabánya ) was a Hungarian weightlifter .

origin

When Imre Földi grew up in Kecskemét, he first wanted to be a football goalkeeper. His great role model was Gyula Grosics , the goalkeeper of the Golden Elf . Because of his small size, Földi switched to wrestling, gymnastics and weightlifting, only to concentrate fully on weightlifting at the age of 14. Földi moved to Tatabánya and became a locksmith.

career

In weightlifting Földi was first used in an international competition in 1959. In 1960 he started at the Olympic Games for the first time.

His career then lasted until 1976, during which he competed at the Olympic Games five times. Földi became Olympic champion in 1972 and several times world and European champion. However, his runner-up world title from the 1970 World Championships was revoked because of doping . With a height of 1.49 m, he had a normal weight of approx. 62 kg. In order to be able to start in the bantamweight (up to 56 kg body weight) because of the better chance of success, he had to train about 6 kg before each competition. He remained active until he was 38 and competed in 21 major international championships (OS, WM, EM). No other weightlifter achieved so many entries. After finishing his active career, he became a coach.
