Mieczysław Nowak (born December 22, 1936 in Chomęcice , † May 17, 2006 in Nowy Dwór Gdański ) was a Polish weightlifter.

Career

As a young man, Nowak practiced various sports, especially boxing . He was only 1.60 m tall and weighed only about 60 kg as an adult. As a weightlifter, he belonged to the clubs LZS Wołów, Śląsk Wrocław and Floty Gdynia (1955 to 1972). The first systematic training in weightlifting began in Gdansk with trainer Aleksander Machowski. Later, in the national team, August Dziedzic and Klemens Roguski were responsible for him. Nowak started at three Olympic Games and won a bronze medal in the featherweight division in Tokyo in 1964 . He was three times European champion in the Olympic triathlon. However, his world championship title at the 1970 World Championships was revoked because of doping . Unfortunately for him, the Japanese Yoshinobu Miyake started in his weight class in the first years of his international career , which was unbeatable at the time. Nowak won the Polish championship four times, taking into account that at his time he had extremely strong competition in his weight class in Poland. Jan Wojnowski , Rudolf Kozłowski , Henryk Trebicki , Kazimierz Czarnecki and Szymon Czyż were all world class weightlifters as well.

After finishing his playing days he became a coach in Gdansk.
