Dimitri Ivanovich "Dito" Schanidse (* 8. February 1937 in Disability ski , Imereti , Georgian SSR ; † 18th November 2010 ) was a Soviet weightlifter Georgian origin. He won a silver medal in featherweight at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics .

Career

Dito Schanidze started out as a gymnast and only started lifting weights at the age of 20. For this reason, the 1.58 meter tall athlete, who started for the Gantiadi Tiflis sports club, needed a relatively long time to reach the top of the Soviet Union and the world’s top.

The first remarkable result he achieved at the age of 29 when he reached the 4th place in the Soviet featherweight championship in 1966 with 345 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. In 1967 he rose to 372.5 kg at the Tbilisi Grand Prix in the Olympic three-way battle and in 1968 he was Soviet runner-up in featherweight with 370 kg.

In 1968 Dito Schanidze achieved a new Soviet record in featherweight at the Baltic Cup in Helsinki with 392.5 kg and was then used at the European Championships in Leningrad , where he did not come close to this record with 367.5 kg and behind the Pole Mieczysław Nowak , who reached 380 kg, took 2nd place. Nevertheless, he was also used at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 and won there in featherweight with 387.5 kg (120-117.5-150) behind the Japanese Yoshinobu Miyake , who scored 392.5 kg the silver medal .

In 1969 Dito Schanidse took 3rd and 2nd place at the World and European Championships in Warsaw and achieved 380 kg (115-115-150) in the Olympic three-way battle. In 1970 he was unable to start at the World and European Championships due to an injury.

In 1971 he was in Sofia with 395 kg (122.5-120-152.5) behind the Poland Jan Wojnowski, who achieved 397.5 kg, Vice European Champion. At the world championship this year in Lima, he failed to press a valid attempt, which left him unplaced without a three-way result.

Dito Schanidze went into the 1972 Olympic year very well prepared. This was already evident at the Soviet championship in Tallinn . There he set a new world record on April 12, 1972 in the Olympic three-way fight with 402.5 kg (127.5-120-155). At the European Championships in Constanța he won the title with 395 kg (122.5-120-152.5) in front of Norair Nurikjan from Bulgaria , who scored 387.5 kg. At the Olympic Games in Munich he then increased in the Olympic three-way fight to 400 kg (127.5-120-152.5), but was defeated by Norair Nurikjan, who grew to 402.5 kg and set the world record. Dito Schanidze won his second Olympic silver medal .

After the 1972 Olympic Games, the International Weightlifting Association abolished pressing. From this point on, the competitions consisted only of a duel, which included tearing and pushing. Although Dito Schanidse was already 35 years old, he didn't even think about stopping after Munich and continued to compete in the international championships. In 1973 he achieved two great successes. He was first in Madrid with 272.5 kg (120-152.5) for the first time in his career European champion in a duel and then he won in Havana with the same result at the World Cup. Both times he defeated the Olympic champion Nurikjan, who lifted 267.5 kg and 270 kg respectively at these championships.

Dito Schanidze's last start at an international championship was at the 1974 European championship in Verona . He achieved there in featherweight 272.5 kg (120-152.5) and had to bow to the Bulgarian Georgi Todorow with the same performance due to the slightly heavier body weight , but referred Nurikjan, who achieved 265 kg, to 3rd place.
