Career

Jan Wojnowski grew up in Torzewo. He attended a high school in Bydgoszcz and then went to the army. The only 1.58 m tall and approx. 60 kg heavy athlete came to weightlifting there . His trainer was Krzysztof Beck. The greatest success he achieved was winning the European Championship in the Olympic three-way fight in 1961 in Sofia in the featherweight division and a world title in the tear. The second title in the tear from the 1970 World Championships was stripped from him because of doping . At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he took the thankless fourth place in the featherweight division. Jan Wojnowski had tough competitors in his weight class at home in Mieczysław Nowak , Henryk Trębicki and Rudolf Kozłowski .
