Career

Nikolai Kolesnikow, of Tatar origin, started lifting weights as a teenager and started for Trud Rostov-on-Don . Over the years he developed into a world class featherweight athlete, in the weight class up to 60 kg body weight. The first result that is known of him, however, he achieved as a bantamweight (up to 56 kg body weight). In 1973 he took 3rd place in a weightlifting tournament in Sochi in this weight class with 235 kg in a duel behind Vladimir Anikin , 250 kg and the like. Rafael Belenkow , 242.5 kg, bde. USSR .

In 1974 Nikolai Kolesnikow, meanwhile moved up to the featherweight division, could not start in the Soviet championship due to an injury. But he won the Baltic Cup in Växjö / Sweden with 275 kg (120-155) in a duel and was then used at the World Cup in Manila . He reached there 277.5 kg (120-157.5) and had to bend in a duel to the Bulgarian Georgi Todorov , who reached 280 kg, while he referred the 1972 Olympic champion Norair Nurikjan from Bulgaria to 3rd place.

In 1975 Nikolai Kolesnikow won his first Soviet championship with 280 kg (120-160). That year he also achieved his first world record in jerking with 160.5 kg, which he improved to 161 kg in the same year and to 161.5 kg the following year. At the World and European Championships this year in Moscow he had to admit defeat to Georgi Todorow, who scored 285 kg, with 277.5 kg (125-152.5). But he became vice world and European champion.

In the 1976 Olympic year he was initially unable to defend his Soviet featherweight championship. He lifted 275 kg (120-155) in this championship and had to give way to Vladimir Golowko, who also reached 275 kg, but was a little lighter than him. But he won at the European Championships this year in Berlin (East) with 282.5 kg (122.5-160) in front of the Bulgarians Todor Todorow , 280 kg and Georgi Todorow, 277.5 kg. This was his first title win at an international championship. This victory was soon followed by the Olympic victory in Montreal . He won there in featherweight with 285 kg (125-160) before his main rival Georgi Todorow, 280 kg u. Kazumusa Hirai from Japan , 275 kg.

In 1977 Nikolai Kolesnikow became the Soviet featherweight champion for the second time. He only needed 275 kg (122.5–152.5) and thus clearly won ahead of Vladimir Sasanow, 265 kg and Wadim Babozhin, 265 kg. At the World and European Championships in Stuttgart , he met a new rival from Bulgaria, Janko Rusew . He defeated this with 280 kg (122.5–157.5) to 277.5 kg. Janko Rusew became one of the most successful weightlifters of all time in the light and middle weight classes.

For Nikolai Kolesnikow came the years 1978 and 1979, which were very successful for him. He did not lose a competition in these two years and became Soviet champions in 1978 and 1979 with 280 kg and 282.5 kg respectively. He was also European champion in 1978 in Havířov with the two-way world record of 290 kg (125-165) and in Gettysburg also world champion , with him 270 kg (117.5-152.5) in a duel to win the title. In 1979 he was in Varna with 292.5 kg (127.5-165), which in turn meant a duel world record, again European champion and left Georgi Todorow by 20 kg behind. At the 1979 World Cup in Saloniki , he snatched 125 kg and then failed three times at his initial weight of 157.5 kg. He achieved no duel performance and remained unplaced.

At the beginning of 1980 Nikolai Kolesnikow won a duel in a featherweight competition in Podolsk with 275 kg (127.5-147.5). In this competition, however, he injured himself so badly in further attempts in pushing that he was canceled for all other competitions in 1980 and thus also missed his participation in the Olympic Games in Moscow.

Nikolai Kolesnikow did not take up his weightlifting career after the recovery. He completed his training as a trainer and was a trainer in the Soviet and Russian weightlifting associations for many years. For several years he was responsible for the Russian junior team in the 1990s.
