Pierino Gabetti (born May 22, 1904 in Sestri Ponente , Genoa , † February 28, 1971 ) was an Italian weightlifter . He became Olympic featherweight champion in 1924 and won a silver medal in the same weight class at the 1928 Olympic Games .

Career

Pierino Gabetti began lifting weights at the US Sestri Ponente sports club as a teenager . Later he moved to the sports club Gimnastica Sampierdranese Genoa . In 1924, at the age of 20, he qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris. He started at featherweight and came in the pentathlon held there, which consisted of one-armed snatch and one-armed pushing, two-armed snatching, two-armed pushing and two-arm pushing, with a total output of 402.5 kg to a superior victory. The runner-up from Austria, Andreas Stadler, achieved 385 kg.

In the years 1925 to 1927 there were no world and no European championships. Perino Gabetti was in good shape even in these years and in 1927 set two world records for two-armed featherweight tearing. On April 10, 1927, he tore 90 kg in Milan and on June 20, 1927, again in Milan, 92.5 kg.

At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 he was back in the field. In Amsterdam the so-called Olympic three-way fight, consisting of two-armed pushing, two-armed tearing and two-armed pushing, was fought for the first time. Pierino Gabetti scored 282.5 kg (80-90-112.5) in this three-way battle and won the silver medal behind Franz Andrysek from Austria, who scored 287.5 kg, because he was slightly lighter than the German Hans Wölpert , who also achieved 282.5 kg.

In 1930 Pierino Gabetti started at the European championship in Munich in the lightweight . He came there in the Olympic three-way fight on 287.5 kg (82.5-90-115). With this achievement he reached the 4th place.

In 1932 he took part in the Olympic Games for the third time. In Los Angeles he reached 300 kg (85-95-120) in the Olympic three-way fight and with the 4th place just missed another medal.

Pierino Gabetti made his last start at the European Championship in 1934, which took place in Genoa. But he was no longer in the shape of earlier years and only came in 5th place in the lightweight with a three-way performance of 277 kg (77.5-90-110).

Pierino Gabetti was also a total of seven times Italian feather and lightweight champion in his career.
