Shi Zhiyong (born February 10, 1980 in Longyan , China ) is a Chinese weightlifter .

Career

Shi Zhiyong comes from a poor background and started lifting weights at the age of 10 in order to be able to support his family. After joining the provincial team, he made the leap to the national team in 1997.

Shi Zhiyong then had his first appearance on the international stage of active players in 1999 at the World Championships in Athens, where he finished fourth.

After winning the Asian Championships in 2000 and 2004, and the Vice World Championships in Vancouver in 2003, he started at the Olympic Games in Athens and won the gold medal in the class up to 62 kg with a duel of 325.0 kg in front of his compatriot Le Maosheng and the Venezuelan Israel José Rubio .

After Athens Shi Zhiyong switched to the class up to 69 kg, in which he also became world champion in the following year 2005, but then had to subordinate himself to Zhang Guozheng or the French Vencelas Dabaya in several championships .

For the Olympic Games in 2008 in their own country, Shi was set up together with Liao Hui and was considered a sure medal candidate. However, old injuries were already noticeable after warming up, which is why he and his trainer decided to reduce the initial weight from 157 kg to 152 kg. Although he was in third place at 152 kg after only one valid attempt in the snatch, he stopped bumping because of shoulder pain.
