Óscar Figueroa at the 2012 Olympic Games

Óscar Albeiro Figueroa Mosquera (born March 27, 1983 in Zaragoza , Departamento de Antioquia , Colombia ) is a Colombian weightlifter . He won a silver medal in featherweight at the 2012 Olympics and a gold medal in 2016.

Career

Óscar Figueroa grew up in Zaragoza. In 1992 his parents moved with him to Cartago in the Valle del Cauca , because the civil war in Zaragoza had become unbearable. In Cartago he worked as a teenager in various sports such as football, basketball, karate and weightlifting, which he eventually stayed with. In the meantime, the 1.65 meter tall athlete belongs to the Liga Vallecaucana de Halterofia sports club and is or was trained by Jaiber Manajarrez and Óswaldo Pinilla.

He competed in his first international competition at the Junior World Championship (U 20) in Prague. He started there in bantamweight and achieved a good 5th place with 245 kg (110-135) in a duel. In 2001 he was much more successful at the Junior World Championships (U 20) in Thessaloniki, because he was there in the bantamweight junior world champion. His performance in a duel was 260 kg (117.5–142.5). In 2002 he could not defend this title at the Junior World Championships (U 20) in Havirov. He lifted 260 kg (122.5-137.5) again in a duel, with which he came in 3rd place.

In 2003, Óscar Figueroa was injured and could not compete. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, however, he was ready for action again, where the bantam weight increased to 280 kg (125–155). With this achievement he took 5th place. The winner Halil Mutlu from Turkey achieved 295 kg (135-160). In 2004 Óscar Figueroa was also the first Colombian champion. In 2005 Óscar Figueroa was injured again and did his military service that year.

Since 2006 he starts in featherweight. In this weight class he achieved a great success at this year's World Cup in Santo Domingo. He achieved in a duel 297 kg (137-160) and won behind Qiu Le from China, who came to 308 kg (140-168), the silver medal.

In 2007 and 2009 Óscar Figueroa did not win any medals at the World Championships in Chiang Mai / Thailand and in Goyang, which he just missed out on both times with 4th place in a duel. In 2007 he achieved 295 kg (135-160) and in 2009 307 kg (139-168) in a duel. Nor did he get any medals in the individual disciplines of snatching and pushing in those years. He was particularly unlucky at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. In March 2008 he won the Pan American Featherweight Championships in Callao / Peru with a duel of 304 kg (137-167), without giving himself away. For this reason, he had big plans for Beijing and set a personal record in pushing at 178 kg in training. When he was warming up before the competition, however, an old hand injury broke out again so that he could not start the competition.

Óscar Figueroa was also unable to take part in the 2010 World Cup due to an injury. At the 2011 World Championships in Paris he was back at the start and came in the featherweight with 308 kg (138-170) back to the thankless 4th place. A month earlier he had set up a personal record at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara as the featherweight winner with 312 kg (137-175).

In 2012 he won the Pan American Championship in Antigua / Guatemala, standing just under lightweight with 64.5 kg body weight, with a duel of 330 kg (145-185). In doing so, he pointed to his ambitions at the Olympic Games in London. In London he was able to meet these hopes, because he won the featherweight with 317 kg (140-177) behind Kim Un-guk from North Korea, who came to 327 kg (153-174), the silver medal.

At the 2013 World Cup in Wrocław, Óscar Figueroa was able to convince again. He achieved there in a duel 316 kg (139-177) and came in 3rd place. With his performance in pushing of 177 kg he even became world champion in this discipline.
