Diego José de Salazar

Diego José de Salazar y Gaspar de Ubeda (* 1659 ; † June 24, 1709 in Seville ) was a Spanish conductor and composer .

Salazar was a choirboy in Seville Cathedral and later Kapellmeister in Estepa . In 1684 he was appointed conductor of Seville Cathedral. As a composer, he created numerous works of church music , including hymns, motets, psalms, masses, laments, Christmas carols and requiums. Salazar died of the plague at the age of 50 .

One of his most famous works is the Villancico in the style of folk music ¡Salga el torillo hosquillo! , a classic piece of the colonial repertoire. It is a bullfight allegory about Jesus and his fight against evil. The original piece was rediscovered in the Archivo Nacional de Sucre in Bolivia and is often performed and recorded again today.
