The continuous increase in population since the beginning of the 20th century is mainly due to immigration from the rural areas in the area as a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs.

economy

The people of earlier centuries lived essentially as self-sufficiency from agriculture, which also included wine and olive growing; Traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds also settled in the village. Today the cultivation of wheat , cotton , sunflowers and olives as well as small industries and the domestic Spanish tourism play a not insignificant role in the economic life of the community.

history

Small Bronze Age finds were made in the municipality . In ancient times the area was under Phoenician , later under Carthaginian and Roman influence. The Romans called the place Ostippo . Almost nothing is known from the Visigothic times . At the beginning of the 8th century the region was overrun by the Moors ; they called the place Istabba ; around the year 900 the city was taken by the troops of the rebellious ʿUmar ibn Hafsūn . In 1241 Estepa was taken over by Ferdinand III's troops . Recaptured by Castile (ruled 1230–1252) ( reconquista ) , then incorporated into the Kingdom of Seville and handed over to the Order of Santiago in 1267 . Estepa remained a Christian border town until the conquest of Granada (1492). In 1543 Charles V (r. 1516–1556) created the title of "Margrave of Estepa", which still exists today. In 1559, Philip II (ruled 1556–1598) ordered Estepas to be incorporated into the possession of the crown to sell the city immediately for 800,000 silver coins to the Genoese merchant family Centurión, who thereby promised a share of the profits in America's trade .

Attractions

  • There are only small remains of the Mauritian castle (castillo or alcázar) built on the highest point of the city . It was modernized by the Santiagoorden and provided with a keep (torre del homenaje) .
  • The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor , which was built in the 13th century on the site of the former mosque , was renovated in the 15th century by the Santiagoorden in Gothic style. The bell tower (campanario) is a late 19th century ingredient. The interior of the church is three naves and has a transept (transept) ; the star-shaped rib vaults are at the same height ( hall church ). The three carved altars in the choir area are eye-catching, the middle one of which was made after 1583. In a side chapel there is a kind of treasure chamber with several chalices and monstrances made of silver.
  • The 40 m high baroque Torre de la Victoria , completed by Andrés de Zabala in the years 1760–66, is the only remnant of a former convent of the Friars Minor . The associated convent buildings were demolished in 1939.
  • The facade of the Carmelite Church, also created by Andrés de Zabala around 1768, is one of the jewels of the Andalusian Baroque.
  • Several other churches from the 16th to 18th centuries enrich the townscape; including the small Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios could also come from Andrés de Zabala.
  • The Palacio de los Marqueses de Cerverales with its portal frame with twisted Solomonic columns is the most beautiful civil building in the city.
