Schad probably grew up in Oberdorf and worked as a weaver . He married a widow who brought children into the marriage. From 1649 he was a judge at the Waldenburg court and from 1652 he was a member of the Oberdorfer Banngericht.

Along with Isaak Bowe, Schad was considered to be the main leader of the Baselbiet subjects in the Peasant War of 1653.

As such, he campaigned to ensure that the aristocratic arbitrariness of the urban upper class and their excessive tax demands etc. a. on salt and the military tax are repealed. Schad also called for joining the Huttwil Farmers' Union , an association of federal farmers against their increasingly absolutist capitals.

Schad was considered to be "the soul of the uprising". He was arrested, tortured and finally executed along with six other Basel insurgents on July 24, 1653.

In 1904 a memorial with the inscription “Suppressed, but not overcome” was erected in Liestal for Uli Schad, Hans Gysin von Liestal, Uli Gysin Läufelfingen , Galli Jenny von Langenbruck , Joggi Mohler von Diegten , Konrad Schuler von Liestal and Heinrich Stutz von Liestal .

In Oberdorf, the Uli Schad fountain sculpture created by Fritz Bürgin is a reminder of this unfortunate but courageous Oberdörfer. A side street also bears his name.
