Utrera is a city in southern Spain in the province of Seville in the autonomous community of Andalusia . With just under 52,000 inhabitants, Utrera is the ninth largest city in the Andalusia region . The old town was classified as a historical cultural monument in 2002 .

Geographical location

Utrera is located in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

The surrounding municipalities are (in the north) Alcalá de Guadaira and Dos Hermanas, (in the east) El Coronil and Arahal, (in the south) Villamartín and Espera, (in the west) Las Cabezas de San Juan and Coria del Rio.

Utrera has clear skies and many hours of sunshine all year round. The climate is Mediterranean with subtropical influences. The annual mean temperature is 17.5 ° C. This makes the city one of the hottest in Europe. The winters are mild. January is the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 10.4 ° C. The summers, on the other hand, are very hot with a mean temperature of 26.8 ° C in August. The threshold of 40 ° C is regularly exceeded.

The amount of precipitation fluctuates around 600 mm per year, concentrated in the months from October to April. December is the wettest month with 92 mm against July with 1 mm.

There are only 65 rainy days and 2898 hours of sunshine on an annual average. On some days, the temperature can drop below freezing at night.

history

Archaeological finds in Utrera indicate a settlement as early as the 3rd millennium BC. The Puente de Alcantarilla bridge , which formed part of the Via Augusta , dates back to Roman times .

The first reliable mention of the city happened in 1253 in a letter from Alfonso X. From 1340 Utrera was permanently under Christian rule. The city flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, but was hit hard by the plague in 1649 .

On October 2nd, 2018, the new community Palmar de Troya was founded from parts of the city .

Location and traffic

The city is located about 25 kilometers southeast of Seville and can be reached from there via the Autovía A-376 . There is also a connection from Utrera by train.
