Montellano is a Spanish municipality with around 7,000 inhabitants in the Andalusian province of Seville .
Geographical location
Montellano is 66 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Seville . The town center lies on the slope of Monte de San Pablo at 230 to 300 msnm . The northern and eastern districts are on steep slopes that set a natural limit for the growth of the community. The southern and western outskirts benefit from a gentler topography , which favors further expansion. The historical center is grouped around the parish church in the eastern part of the settlement. The rows of houses there extend in an east-west direction. In the younger parts of the city in the west, the streets are less regular.

history
The first settlements can be traced back to the Bronze Age . The Roman times followed the Phoenician rule . Archaeological sites such as the remains of the Ponce manor house and the remains of burial sites near Las Lumbreras and La Ballestera have been preserved from it. Remnants of the wall can indicate a Roman settlement; however, their assignment is controversial.
According to tradition, the battle of the Río Guadalete took place near La Vega de los Caballeros in 711 , in which the Visigoths were defeated by an Arab - Moorish army. After the Arab conquest, the population grew; The economic basis for this was cattle breeding. Remains of Moorish architecture at Algaidas de Cotte and Mazmorras bear witness to that time.
It is not known at what time the Christian reconquest took place. According to historical documents, it can be narrowed down to 1240 - 1253. An unclear border line to the neighboring emirate of Granada prevents a more precise dating. In 1461 the place fell into the possession of the Osuna noble house . He remained under their rule until the beginning of the 19th century. 1788 Montellano were by royal decree of Charles III. granted city rights.
During the Napoleonic Wars , the city was occupied twice by French troops and set on fire to break resistance from the local population. Hence the illustration of the burning city in the city arms, with the inscription POR LOS FRANCESES | 14 y 22 D ABRIL | ~ 1810 ~ .
