Marinaleda is a municipality in the Andalusian province of Seville in Spain in the comarca of Sierra Sur de Sevilla . On January 1, 2019, the 24.82 km² community had 2627 inhabitants.

Local politics

The community has been ruled by the Eurocommunist Mayor Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo ( Izquierda Unida / IU ) since 1979 . In the 2007 local elections, the Eurocommunists of the IU 7 and the members of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) received 4 seats in the 11-member parliament. In the local elections in May 2011, the IU received 9 seats (73.1%) and the PSOE 2 (21.4%).

Cooperative projects are co-financed by both the Andalusian regional government and the EU.

economy

The place is located in an agricultural area. Artichokes, beans, peppers and olives are all grown. The main employer in the village is the agricultural cooperative association El Humoso, whose products are sold under the Humar brand.

A significant part of the economic and construction activity takes place in self-administration . Around every fourth inhabitant receives grants from the Plan de Empleo Rural (PER), a regional program to increase employment in rural Andalusia and Extremadura .
