Geographical location

Location of Coria del Río in the province of Seville

Coria del Río is twelve kilometers south-southeast of Seville on the west bank of the Guadalquivir . Its extensive swamps extend south of the city. The city is only five meters above sea level with the exception of the small elevation Cerro de San Juan .

Neighboring towns are Dos Hermanas in the east, La Puebla del Río in the south, Villamanrique de la Cordesa in the southwest, Aznalcázar in the west, Almensilla in the northwest and Palomares del Rio in the north.

history

Chapel of San Juan Bautista on the hill of the same name

Copper Age settlements were located on Cerro de San Juan around 2600 BC . Settlement remains have also been discovered from the Iberian Bronze Age around 1700 to 1600 BC. The name Caura , which means hill , could come from that time . Remains of a Phoenician temple from the 8th century BC show that Phoenicians settled in the region at that time. The Phoenicians operated a port and a trading post on this section of the Guadalquivir.

In Roman times it was an important place with the privilege of minting coins . After the Muslim conquest of 711, in the era of Al-Andalus , the place was called Qawra . At that time there were several raids by Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries . In 844 they set up a camp a little further north, in Tablada, until they were defeated. After the Reconquista in the 13th century, Alfonso the Wise settled 150 Catalan families, to whom he transferred the entire municipality as inheritance.

The city experienced an economic boom in the 15th century when Seville's port became Puerto de Indias , the main port of communication with the New World. In 1594 it became part of the Kingdom of Seville . According to the census of that time , recorded in the Libro de millones , it counted 360 taxable citizens. In the 17th century Coria del Río became the property of the Conde de Olivares , favorite of Philip IV . In that century, the Japanese diplomat and samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga visited the city on his expedition to Europe. Some of the participants in his expedition stayed there to await Tsunenaga's return while he continued on to Madrid and Rome. He didn't come back until seven years later. During this time, some of those who stayed behind had gained a foothold in the area. They stayed and left offspring. For this reason, some Corianos and Corianas have the surname Japón .

From the 18th century until the end of the nobility in the 19th century, the town was owned by the Counts of Altamira.

In 1992 a Japanese delegation donated a statue of Hasekura to the city. Among the members of the 60-person group were the mayor of Ōsato , the governor of Miyagi Prefecture and some representatives from Sendai City . On June 14, 2013, Hiro-no-miya Naruhito Shinno , Hereditary Prince of Japan, visited the site. On the occasion of the 400-year relationship between Japan and Spain, he planted a tree at the Hasekura monument. Since then, the city's rugby team has been called Samuráis .

Museo Blas Infante

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Andalusian politician Blas Infante had his house built outside the city on a hill near Puebla del Río. In 2006, the Museo de la Autonomía Andaluza and the Centro de Estudios Andaluces were established near it .

economy

fishing

The occurrence of the sturgeon in the region enabled the establishment of a caviar production facility in 1932 . The company was located in a building called Villa Pepita and belonged to the brothers Nicolás and Jesús de Ybarra y Gómez. The fishing industry expert Theodor EA Classens acted as a consultant when the company was founded.

Sturgeon fishing ceased in 1970. For one thing, the water quality had deteriorated significantly. In addition, the Alcalá del Río dam, built in 1931 , prevented the sturgeons from reaching up the river to spawn. In 48 years, 2,987 females and 1,027 males had been caught. Eventually all reproductive specimens were destroyed and there were no more sturgeons in the river.

Get the fishery after having bleak (Spanish Alburno ).

Agriculture

Arable farming is carried out on around 3,200 hectares . Cotton is grown on a quarter of this area . Trees are cultivated on around 1,000 hectares, including around 380 hectares of orange and 160 hectares of olive trees (as of 2017).

Commercial and industrial

There are three business parks east of the A-8050 road. From north to south they are called La Estrella , Coria del Río and El Rocío . In total, the city recorded more than 1,500 commercial enterprises in 2017, the vast majority of which were small businesses. Only 22 companies had more than 20 employees.

Statue of the Virgen de la Estrella

From August 31st to September 8th, cult acts in honor of the city's patroness Nuestra Señora de la Estrella take place. The high point is a procession. This veneration of Mary has its origin in the 13th century. The currently used statue of Mary, which depicts Our Lady with a baby Jesus in her arms, dates from the 20th century.

Fiesta del Albur

(Spanish culinary Fischer Festival, the bleak Alburno spot Albur ) dedicated. The festival has been celebrated annually since 1993.

Fair

The Feria de Coria has been celebrated since 1838, making it three years older than the Feria de Sevilla . It takes place in the second half of September on the Prado de la Soledad on the riverside. Because of the economic crisis in 2012, the Feria was canceled for the first time in 175 years. It was held again in 2013, but with fewer ride and show shops and less public budget.

Virgen del Carmen procession

Statue of the Virgen del Carmen

Every year on July 16, Our Lady of Mount Carmel , the patron saint of seafarers, is honored with a procession. This procession is organized by the Hermandad de Jesús del Gran Poder . The procession wanders the streets of the city and eventually crosses the river by ferry.

The statue of Mary that is carried during the procession was created by Francisco Buiza in 1969. On the Wednesday of Holy Week, the brotherhood goes on a procession with the same statue. It has its permanent place in the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella.

Holy Week ( Semana Santa )

As in very many places in Spain, the religious brotherhoods and associations organize processions and religious celebrations during Holy Week. These activities are particularly pronounced in Coria del Río. Several processions take place every day on Palm Sunday and from the following Tuesday to Easter Monday. Holy Week in Coria del Río has been classified as an event of National Tourist Importance ( Interés Turístico Nacional ).

Sports

Coria has produced numerous outstanding athletes, including a number of Primera División football players , coach Juan Santisteban and Fernando Climent Huerta , rowers and medalists at Olympic Games and World Cups.

In 1923 the Coria Club de Fútbol was founded, which plays its matches in the local Estadio Guadalquivir.
