Castilleja de la Cuesta is a Spanish city five kilometers from Seville in the province of Andalusia .

The city is already very old; the year it was founded is controversial. It is likely that the first settlers were Romans . There is evidence that Arabs later settled here .

As Ferdinand III. conquered the area in 1248, he named the place Alixar. However, this name could not hold up. Over time, the name Castilleja de la Cuesta established itself.

A famous visitor was Hernán Cortés , he died in the city on December 2nd, 1547.
