Location of the municipality | ||
La Algaba is a Spanish municipality in the province of Seville in Andalusia . It belongs to the Comarca Vega del Guadalquivir and extends on the right edge. Its center is only eleven meters above sea level on the banks of the lower Guadalquivir .
The municipality's population was 16,374 on January 1st, 2019. This figure is the result of significant growth in recent years, due to the integration of the city into the northern urban areas of Seville, and also due to the development of agriculture, especially citrus orchards .
history
The origins of the place are in pre-Roman times. It was founded as a settlement of the Tartessian Turdetani Balbilis and was later destroyed during the Visigoth times. The current name comes from the Arabic Al-Gaba , which means forest (Spanish El Bosque ). Ferdinand III. conquered the place in 1247 and gave it to his son Don Fadrique . In 1304 the place was assigned to the Infante Don Alfonso de la Cerda . This later ceded him to the Duke of Nieblas. Eventually he switched to Don Juan Alonso Pérez de Guzmán in Medina Sidonia . Philip II created the title of Marquis de la Algaba in order to generate financial income for the state. The place belonged to this manor until the nineteenth century.
The original city center consists of a large wall ring. This was recently overhauled. In the 1950s to 1970s, new suburbs emerged near the traditional city limits. New residential areas were built on previous agricultural land in the 1980s and 1990s, between the three physical boundaries: the Guadalquivir River , county road 431 and the Santiponce - La Algaba motorway.
