New Russian
The term New Russians ( Russian новый русский - nowy russki ) stands for a stereotype that emerged at the end of perestroika and is used to describe a new social class in Russia .
In general, “New Russians” are the successful business people or the high-earning employees of a large company . In Russia, the phrase “New Russian” first appeared in 1992 in an article in the Russian newspaper Kommersant ( Russian Коммерсантъ ). The first use of this expression was already two years earlier in the English form " New Russian " in the book of the same name by the American journalist Hedrick Smith . Later the phrase was literally translated into Russian .
There is also the opinion that this expression is a play on the French expression " nouveau riche " ( the nouveau riche ).
