Alcalá de Guadaíra is a Spanish city in the province of Seville in the Region of Andalusia .
location
The city is located 15 kilometers southeast of Seville , on the Guadaíra River and at the end of the Alcores , an elevation in the Guadalquivir plains . Population: 75,279 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).
history
Alcalá was probably already a settlement in prehistoric times, as the dolmen La Cueva del Vaquero indicates. Founded as a Roman fort, the large castle complex was built under the Almohads , from which the entire place takes its name (al-Qalat = Arabic castle). As a key position for access to the city of Seville , the facility was gradually expanded to become one of the largest in all of Andalusia. King Ferdinand III. was able to take the town and castle in 1246 without major fighting. Alcalá became part of Christian Castile through the Reconquista . The strategic importance of Alcalá for Seville took a back seat to the economic one. Several mills were already in operation on the river in Arab times. The city supplied the metropolis with bread and was called "Alcalá de los panaderos" (Alcalá the baker) .

Population development
economy
The municipality of Alcalá is now one of the most economically active areas in all of Andalusia. In addition to the traditional olive oil and bread factories, all sorts of enterprises have been added since the 1960s, including tank production. Alcalá is the municipality in the province of Seville (maybe even in all of Andalusia) with the highest energy consumption. The municipality has experienced tremendous economic growth over the past 15 years; this had a positive effect on the previously very high unemployment and was accompanied by a systematic renovation and beautification of the old town center. Albero is also mined in Alcalá, the orange-red sand that is exported to bullring all over the world.
Life in Alcalá
Compared to lively Seville, Alcalá is quite quiet. But it's also much cheaper. You can get a few tapas in many bars; good restaurants and pastry shops are also available. With the Parque Oromana on the Guadaira river, Alcalá has a particularly beautiful local recreation area that attracted a whole school of painters in the 19th century and is now very well looked after again - although the river is still heavily polluted by olive oil production.
Attractions
The Castillo arabe with its fortress ring and the towers (has recently been restored and partially reconstructed), the churches of Santa Maria del Àguila (in the Castillo), Santiago , San Sebastián (both 15th / 16th centuries) and the Ermita de San Roque ; the Arab mills on the Guadaira river; the bridge of Charles III. ; the Gandul area with the necropolis .
Sports
In 2008, the three-cushion World Cup , a major carom tournament, was held in the city to conclude the tournament series. The winner was the Dutchman Dick Jaspers , who beat the defending champion from Sweden Torbjörn Blomdahl 3-1 in the final.
Town twinning
The result of a youth exchange that began in 1990, a partnership agreement was signed in 1997 with the Stuhr municipality in Lower Saxony.
