Torbjörn Blomdahl (born October 26, 1962 in Gothenburg , Sweden ) is a Swedish carambola player . As a multiple world and European champion and multiple World Cup winner, he is one of the best and most important three- cushion players in history, alongside the American Willie Hoppe and the Belgian Raymond Ceulemans .

Life

Torbjörn Blomdahl was born in Gothenburg as the son of the carambola player and world champion Lennart Blomdahl . When he was eleven, the family moved to Helsingborg . He graduated from school with a high school diploma. In addition to his mother tongue , he also speaks German, English, French and Spanish.

Particularly creative or daring solutions are typical of his game. But he describes himself as neither an excellent theorist nor an esthete. When asked about his game system, he replied: "My nose". The Belgian series winner Raymond Ceulemans was fascinated by Blomdahl and said of him: “Blomdahl is a talent that happens once every 50 years. He will dominate the scene for a long time. "Germany's most successful carom player Dieter Müller described the Swede as follows:" Of course Torbjörn is first and foremost an excellent billiards player. But there is also more, something that cannot be rationally grasped or described. "

Torbjörn Blomdahl is also an excellent pool player. He won an exhibition match against Efren Reyes in Japan with 9: 5 ( 9-ball ) and 30:20 (three-cushion, 20 takes, GD 1,500). In July 2007 he won a live TV show tournament in Korea (3-cushion (20:12), 8-ball (2-0), 9-ball (5: 3)) against the top Korean pool player Young Hwae-jeong .

Torbjörn Blomdahl has a wife and two sons and spends part of his life in Backnang in Baden-Württemberg .

Career

Blohmdahl has been among the world's best in the three-cushion discipline since the mid-1980s . He has won many international tournaments - only Raymond Ceulemans can boast more international titles.

In 1981, at the age of 19, Blomdahl won his first of more than 20 Swedish championships.

In 1983 he was defeated in Dunkirk narrowly against "Mr. 100 “named Ceulemans in the final of the European Championship. Two years later, in 1985 in Amersfoort , he ended Ceuleman's winning streak - he had won almost all World and European Championships since 1962 - and won the first of his eight European championship titles. Together with his father he won in 1987 and 1991 as the Swedish national team, the three-band world championship for national teams , as well as 1985, 1987 and 1991, the three-band European Championship for national teams . With Michael Nilsson he became world champion seven times.

At the German Open 1988 in Backnang he won against Ceulemans and was number 1 in the world rankings for the first time, which he was able to defend for the next ten years.

In 1987 he became world champion in three cushion for the first time in Cairo and then later in biathlon at the World Cup in Épinal, France . In the following years Blomdahl was the dominant player in the three-cushion World Cup , which was also rated as the World Cup up to and including 1991. In 1988 he won four of the five world cup tournaments and was the overall winner for the second time. In 1991 and 1997 he won this UMB title two more times.

In 1994, 1995 and 1996 he achieved three overall World Cup victories in a row, which no other player has achieved so far. In 1998, 2001, 2007 and 2010 he screwed the record to a total of ten victories in the overall ranking of the World Cup, whereby in 2007 he again won four of the five World Cup tournaments and thus regained first place in the world rankings.

After the birth of his second son, things got a little quieter for Blomdahl, but he was still among the four best players in the world. In 2005, exactly 20 years after his first European Championship victory, Blomdahl was able to fight for the eighth time in Porto .

2012/13 season

He finished second at the Verhoefen Open in New York in August 2012 . After his poor performance at the World Cup in Porto , where he did not make it to the final round as the bottom of the group, Blomdahl showed a much better performance a week later in the second three-cushion World Cup of the year in Suwon, South Korea , beating Zanetti 3-1 in the final . He took back first place in the world rankings. He also celebrated his 40th individual World Cup victory. In this respect, the Dutchman Dick Jaspers with 19 and the Belgian Frédéric Caudron with 11 wins follow in a respectable distance.

2013/14 season

After Blomdahl was surprisingly eliminated in the round of 16 against the eventual winner Gang Dong-koong from Korea at the first World Cup of the season, he was back in top form two weeks later in Corinth, Greece . First he won against Roland Forthomme (40:24 / 17 shots), followed by Heo Jung-han (40: 9/10 - ED = 4,000!), Tran Quyet Chien (40: 40/18 - 3: 2 after penalty ) , Ex-world champion Filipos Kasidokostas (40: 10/13) and finally Ruben Legazpi with 40:19 in 15 shots. All in all , with 200 points in 83 shots, he played a GD of 2.739 and thus set a new world record.

With two individual victories ( 2013/1 in Antalya and 2013/3 in Corinth ) and a second place at the 2013/4 World Cup in Medellín , Blomdahl became the overall World Cup winner for the second time in a row after 2011. It was his eleventh overall World Cup victory.

2014/15 season

After his 43rd World Cup victory in Porto in July, Blomdahl won the three-cushion world championship again in November in Bordeaux, France, after 18 years. It was the fifth world title in his career. After Raymond Ceulemans , who has been world champion 21 times, he is the second most successful three-cushion player of all time.

Season 2019/20

32 years after his first title win at the three-cushion world championship in 1987 , Blomdahl was able to secure the sixth gold medal in the final against the 38-year-old Vietnamese Nguyễn Đức Anh Chiến with 40:37 in Randers, Denmark .
