Tournament commentary
This was the last World Championship at the Raymond Ceulemans alias “Mr. 100 ”, multiple individual world champion from Belgium, took part. The defending champions were the Swedes (Team A), who were eliminated early in the group stage. Vice world champions Germany (Team A) won the final against the Netherlands with 5: 1 sets and became world champions for the fourth time after 1993, 1994 and 1997. The best player of the tournament was Christian Rudolph , followed by Martin Horn and Dick Jaspers who also played the best game with 7,500 (15 points in 2 shots).
Peru had registered for the tournament, but had not come. They received 50 penalty points for this. For the first time the American top player Pedro Piedrabuena was there.
Both teams from Japan and Germany made it to the quarter-finals. France's 2nd team played better than the 1st team and was five places ahead of the favorites from their own country.
