The three-cushion world championship for national teams in 2004 was the 18th edition of this tournament, which has been held annually since 1981 in the three- cushion version of billiards . It took place from March 4th to 7th, 2004 in Viersen ; - since 1990 permanent venue of the World Cup.

Tournament commentary

Turkey that won this tournament was able to successfully defend its title. The bad performance of the Swedes and the first team from Germany surprised negatively. They only finished 11th and 10th. Egypt was able to look forward to the quarter-finals, but had to admit defeat to the Spaniards there. They took 3rd place in the final ranking, together with France. The USA could not build on their successes of 1987 and 1992 when they became runner-up world champions. They only finished 21st, behind Syria, Colombia and their neighbor Mexico. Last year's vice world champion Greece did not convince either , despite the identical line-up ( Nikos Polychronopoulos / Filipos Kasidokostas ) and ended up in 13th place. Mexico, the USA, the Czech Republic, Japan (2) and Switzerland could not win any of their games. The best player of the tournament was Semih Saygıner from Turkey, Peter de Bakker from Belgium came in second. Neither player lost any of their games. Third place went to Spaniard Daniel Sánchez , who also didn't lose a game.

Tournament mode

24 teams were invited, 20 teams had registered. The missing teams were filled by the 2nd teams as follows:

  1. Defending champion: TurkeyTurkeyTurkey
  2. Organizer: GermanyGermanyGermany
  3. Third place: NetherlandsNetherlandsNetherlands
  4. Runner-up in the ranking: JapanJapanJapan

The game was played in eight groups ( A – H ) of three teams each on two match billiards. Each team consisted of two players. The best eight nations in the world rankings were seeded and played straight into the main round. The first in the group made it to the final round.

It was played on points in the set system - in the group stage "Best of 3", from the quarterfinals onwards "Best of 5", each on 15 points. It was the first World Cup in which the 3rd place was no longer played out. Thus two bronze medals were awarded. The shot clock was set to 40 seconds, with the possibility for each player to take a time-out of 40 seconds per game. In the event of a tie, the following shall apply:

  1. Match points ( MP )
  2. Sentence ratio ( SV )
  3. Team General Average (MGD)
