Jun'ichi Komori ( Japanese 小森 純一 , Komori Jun'ichi ; born July 11, 1941 , † July 26, 2015 ), was a Japanese three- cushion player and world champion.

Career

Jun'ichi Komori was one of the grandmasters and most respected players in his sport in his home country. In the 1980s and 1990s he and his compatriot Nobuaki Kobayashi formed a congenial duo that won the team world championship three times (1981 in Mexico City, 1985 in Bordeaux and 1992 in Viersen). Komori won four national titles. At the three-cushion world championships he could never achieve a gold medal, but he was bronze medalist in 1976, 1978 and 1985. In all tournaments Raymond Ceulemans and Kobayashi were placed in front of him. In the early days of his career he also played cadre and was able to achieve a maximum series (HS) of 70 in cadre 47/2 at a national tournament . Although he could speak almost no English, he was considered popular in the scene, he was distinguished by the elegance of English snooker, his demeanor was typically Asian, polite and reserved.

In 1993 he succeeded in the Dutch league (honor division) with a maximum series of 28 a new world record, thus breaking the previous record of 25 from Willie Hoppe .

Just 14 days after his 74th birthday, he died of cancer in 2015.
