Ernst Christian Rudolph (born January 14, 1965 in Cologne ) is a German carom player and three- cushion world champion. In March 2019, Rudolph was appointed as the successor to the resigned national coach Wolfgang Zenkner .
Life
His father Ernst Rudolph was a 17-time German champion and two-time vice European champion and an important German billiard player of the fifties and sixties. At the christening, Christian Rudolph received a billiard cue from the then President of the German Billiards Association , Herbert Fassbender . At the age of nine he began to train billiards in the billiards salon in Cologne that his father ran.
In addition to the classic introduction to billiards, free play , cadre and binding , he played three cushion from the start, which he specialized in early on. Rudolph studied plant engineering and process engineering and lives on the Lower Rhine .
Career
In 1988, 1989 and 1992 he won the German Cup team championships in Bottrop with his club BF Horster-Eck Essen in 1959 . In the individual disciplines he won the German Grand Prix (GGP) in 1990, 1992 and 1993. In 1994 he won his first German three-cushion championship in Backnang and was able to defend the title of team world champion in Viersen together with his teammate Maximo Aguirre . In the final against the Netherlands he defeated it Dick Jaspers , where he ended the game with a 12-series. In 1990 and 1992 the two had already finished third there. Also in 1994 he won the European Cup with Horster-Eck as the first German club in 34 years, also in 1996 and 1997.
In the 1996/97 season he won the world championship in three cushion against Daniel Sánchez in Hattingen at the start of the season . The Spaniard missed match point in the fifth and decisive set, and Rudolph was able to score the last two points to win. It was the first victory of a German in the 68-year history of this tournament. In 1997, with Johann Schirmbrand as a partner in Viersen, he won the team world championship held there since 1990 . At the end of the 1997 season, he was the first German to win the overall World Cup tournament series by winning the World Cup in Herne . This hat trick (overall World Cup winner, individual and team world champion) hadn't been achieved by anyone before him. In 2002 he won the World Team Championship in Viersen together with Martin Horn . Rudolph had to withdraw from the 2011 national team championship due to problems with his cervical spine .
In 2013 he and Horn became vice world champion at the World Cup for national teams. At the European Championships in April, Rudolph was in the final with Marco Zanetti and became vice European champion. At the beginning of June he and Markus Galla finished third in the first edition of the German three-cushion masters . In July he took part in the World Games as the reigning German champion and was defeated by the eventual winner Zanetti in the quarter-finals.
