Edmond Soussa (born October 11, 1898 in Cairo , † May 29, 1989 in Paris ) was an Egyptian carom player in various disciplines of billiards, eleven times world champion and painter.

Career

Edmond Soussa was the first great amateur billiards star in the late 20s to mid 30s after the professional world championships in the United States ended. Born in Egypt, he immigrated to France in the mid-1920s. There he met Roger Conti , one of the best billiard coaches of the time. His great talent quickly proved to be an all-rounder. At the Cadre 47/2 World Championship in Paris in 1927, he was third. In the following year he was three times world champion in the disciplines of three cushion , free game and in cadre 47/1. In the next few years he dominated the billiards scene and was eleven times world champion and twice European champion. In the mid-30s he retired from active billiards and worked as a freelance artist in Paris.

It was only with the start of the Three Cushion World Cup in 1986 that he returned to the big billiards stage. Werner Bayer, founder of the World Cup , convinced him to design a trophy for this tournament series. Even in his old age he attended various three-cushion world cups.

In 1987 Soussa was awarded the Diplômes D'honneur by the Académie des Sports .

Association work

As was customary at the time, the players often held a post in one or more associations at the same time. After his active time (1931), Soussa remained as general secretary of his home national association “Fédération Egyptienne des Amateurs de Billard”, although he lived in Paris and worked as an artist.
