The free game world championship in 1969 was the 17th and last UMB world championship in the free game . The tournament took place from November 20th to 23rd in Linz , Austria.
history
Even before the first thrust of this world championship, some officials spoke out in favor of removing the free game from the program of the world championships. So it turned out later. Since with the strength of the top players at the time, everyone was actually able to finish a game in one shot, the victory could also be achieved with a lot of luck. Despite everything, the world championship in Linz was a great success. There were broadcasts on Austrian television and the audience interest was very high with up to 600 daily.
Before the tournament began, there was no clear favorite. Several players, at the head of Raymond Ceulemans, the defending champion José Gálvez Manzano, the European champion Henk Scholte and Jean Marty were considered winners mainly by experts. So it was that no player could finish the tournament undefeated. After defeats to Klaus Hose in the second game and Franz Stenzel in the fourth game, nobody expected Ceulemans to be the winner. But with convincing victories against fellow favorites Marty, Galvez and Scholte, he won the remaining games and was tied with three other players by the best GD of 178.42 , which also meant a new world record, for the first time and thus for the last time world champion in the free Lot. The tournament average of 81.60 has never been reached either .
Tournament mode
