José (Pepé) Gálvez Manzano (born February 2, 1930 in Huelva , Spain ; † October 19, 2013 ibid) was a Spanish carom player in the classic disciplines of free game and cadre .

biography

Gálvez was born in Huelva Plaza de San Francisco in 1930. He came from a family with an entrepreneurial tradition, spent his childhood and the Spanish Civil War of the post-war period under the protection of his mother and with his eight siblings between school and the pastry shop, which was the family business. In his youth, at the age of 17 or 18, with no clear sporting career ambitions, he tried his luck as a “novillero” (budding bullfighter), which was not really his true calling as he would devote himself to a sport that is little practiced today is, but was very popular back then, billiards.

His beginnings in this sport were at the age of about 18, in the billiard halls of "La Cervecería Viena" (Calle Concepción) and the "Bar Los Amigos" (Avda. Portugal, today Banco Banesto), meeting point of the salon sports of that time. Thanks to his rapid development in the sport, he soon became the best player in town. At the age of 21 he won his first regional championship in Andalusia and took part in a Spanish billiards championship in Madrid for the first time.

Little by little, his billiards are being perfected, especially in the classic disciplines: free game , cadre , binding and pentathlon. At the age of 24 he won his first Spanish billiards championship in Cadre 47/2 in Barcelona. At the age of 27 he won his first Cadre 71/2 European Championship in Thionville , France. It jumped to the top of the world and in Spain it became sports news in the national press. In 1964, at the age of 34, he reached the peak of his sporting career and became world champion in Vigo in the free game. In his career he has stood on the podium 19 times in the international field and sixty times in Spanish championships in various disciplines.

Many of his trophies are in the sports center “Las Américas”.

During his career, Pepe Gálvez ran the billiards school at the Andrés Estrada sports center in Madrid.
