The free game world championship in 1964 was the 16th UMB world championship in the free game. The tournament took place from June 3rd to 7th in Vigo , Spain.

history

The fact that the last World Cup had already been eleven years ago showed that the interest in the free game clearly decreased. Again it was Vigo who organized this championship. It was a world championship of records. José Gálvez Manzano played the new general average record (GD) of 156.76 in eight games . After the trick-taking game it was 135.42, which was also above the old world record. The tournament average was also well above the old record. The surprise of the tournament was the Portuguese Jorge Pinto who finished the tournament level on points with the eventual winner Galvez. In a hard-fought playoff game, however, he then had to admit defeat. The Belgian Jos Vervest was unlucky. He ended the game against Joaquín Domingo in the second shot and would have been the third player with twelve points if he had won. That would have given him the chance to win the title in another playoff game. Domingo managed to tie 493 points in follow-up. Norbert Witte, who replaced the German champion Siegfried Spielmann at short notice, played a good tournament and came in seventh. The Austrian champion Heinrich Weingartner experienced a pitch-black tournament and was only last.

Tournament mode

Round robin mode was played with nine participants. In the event of a tie, the following order will be applied:

  1. MP = match points
  2. GD = general average
  3. HS = maximum series
