Osvaldo Berardi (born November 4, 1931 in Argentina , † March 1, 2016 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine carom player in the series disciplines free game and cadre , later he also played three cushion .
Career
At the age of 14 he started playing billiards. Berardi belonged to the generation of players, alongside Pedro Leopoldo Carrera , Enrique Navarra and the emigrated Spaniard Enrique Miró , who helped Argentina achieve world fame, recognition and importance in billiards in the middle of the 20th century. In 1959 he began his long series of triumphs by winning two national titles (Cadre 71/2 and Free Game). In 1961 he won the first of his 17 South American championships in Buenos Aires. In 1967 he won the world championship in Cadre 71/2 in Düsseldorf . He beat serial winner Raymond Ceulemans as well as other world class players like Dieter Müller , Jean Marty (Berardi had been his student since 1962 and took lessons from Marty in Paris three times a year!), Tini Wijnen and Hans Vultink . Berardi received two silver medals at the 1974 World Championships in Cadre 47/2, this time behind Vultink and in 1975 in 71/2, behind Francis Connesson from France, both times in front of a home crowd in Buenos Aires. With 69 individual victories, he is the record holder at the Argentine Championships in 7 different categories, including: 16 in cadre 47/2, 13 in 71/2, 15 in the free game and five in three-cushion , including one in a row in 1988, 1989 and 1990 Previously only Carrera, Carlos Friedenthal and Marcelo Lopez were able to achieve this. Later he devoted himself to teaching in the historical and Argentina's most famous billiard salon from 1894 "Los 36 Billares". In 2007 the tournament in honor of his 40th anniversary of his world championship took place there. As often as Berardi, no Argentine billarista has participated in world championships, 27 times. Much of it took place in Europe at the time, which was a time and money consuming affair for any player. In 1990 he had his last international appearance when he took part in the triathlon in Essen with the national team .
Honors
- The Konex Foundation awarded Berardi the Premios Konex three times : in 1980 with the “Diploma al Mérito” and in 1990 twice with the “Diploma al Mérito” and “Premio Konex de Platino”.
- The historic billiard café "Los 36 Billares", founded in Buenos Aires in 1894, named a gaming room after him.
