Pieter "Piet" Jacobus van de Pol (born September 21, 1907 in Charlois ( Rotterdam ), † September 22, 1996 in Rockanje ), also known as The Tall One because of his stature , was a Dutch carom player and multiple world and European champion.
Career
The son of a coffee maker started playing billiards at the age of 7. Van de Pol, who is almost 2 meters tall, taught billiards in his father's bar in Charlois / Rotterdam. He was a natural and at thirteen he was a member of the De Spiel billiards association . He later moved to De Maasstad and soon found his love for the cadre game.
When he participated in the Dutch championship in 1932 and 1933, he won the title in both years, which was the beginning of his successful career. He won his first world title at the age of 34 in 1947, followed by two European titles and several titles at the Dutch championships. In 1951 he became world champion in Buenos Aires , where he had a meeting with Evita Perón .
1958 set a new series record of 400 points in a row at the 47/2 European Championship in Ghent against the Spaniard José Gálvez. This record is particularly significant due to the fact that ivory balls were still played at the tournament.
In addition to billiards, van de Pol was a staunch Feyenoord fan and catering entrepreneur. He owned billiards shops on Tidemanstraat ( ⊙ ), Ammanstraat ( ⊙ ) and Goudsesingel ( ⊙ ).
In 1961 van de Pol moved to Rockanje ( ⊙ ), southwest of Rotterdam. In 1967 he stopped playing billiards professionally. He died one day after his 89th birthday in 1996.
