René Gabriëls (* 18th January 1912 ; † 20th June 1982 ) was a Belgian Karambolagespieler and a pool table manufacturer.

Career

René Gabriëls and Théo Moons at the Cadre 47/2 European Championship in 1933

In July 1931, when Gabriels was just 19 years old, he played for the first time at the World Cup in the free game , where he took a remarkable third place. In February he had already won the runner -up title at the Cadre 45/2 European Championship . Only in the final did he have to admit defeat to his compatriot Gustave van Belle . Third was old world champion (1925) Jan Dommering from the Netherlands.

In the international match in Cadre 45/2 between Germany and Belgium in 1938 in Düsseldorf Gabriels managed a series of 400 in the game against Walter Lütgehetmann , the world record for the amateurs was 296 at the time World Cup acted. At the Cadre-47/2-EM in 1947 he succeeded in this series again. In the same year at the Simonis Cup on 450 points he was able to finish again in 1 recording.

By 1951, his last World Cup participation in Buenos Aires , he had won a total of seven world championship titles. There are also four second and third placings and two European championships with three further second and third placings.

Foundation of the Gabriels company

Increasingly dissatisfied with the constantly changing materials of the tables at which he played, Gabrieles began to develop his own pool table. Later on, it was to set the standard for tournament tables. In 1932, at the age of 20, he founded his own manufacture under the name "Gabriels-Billards" . His developments ultimately resulted in the "Imperator" table , the most widely used carambol table at world level, which has been manufactured to this day .

In 2003, "Gabriels-Billards" merged with the Dutch table manufacturer "Loontjens Biljarts" , which in turn had been making their own tables since 1920. Among other things, they produced the traditional "Roothaert tables" . The company is one of the largest manufacturers and is the market leader when it comes to carom and pool tables.

In November 2011 it was announced in a press release that Gabrieles-Billiards had entered into a three-year partnership with the US-American billiards association USBA, beginning January 1st, 2012. The agreement concerns the “Official Partnership” and sponsorship.
