Roger Conti , (born February 8, 1901 in Pardies , Pyrénées-Atlantiques , France ; † July 14, 1995 ) was a professional French carom player who knew all disciplines. As a professional player, he was not allowed to take part in the tournaments of the Union Internationale des Fédérations des Amateurs de Billard (UIFAB). The separation between amateur and professional players only dissolved much later, and there is no precise date. However, the UIFAB did not want to do without Conti's professional knowledge and skills and brought him to Lille in 1932 as a referee for the World Artistic Kick Championship .

biography

Conti received his secondary education in the Collèges de Pau and Toulouse, where his passion for billiards began to grow. He starts playing billiards in Tarbes, where his parents had a café. During the study of mechanics, the principles of mechanics (the gestures, the different positions of the body, depending on the point to be performed) quickly became clear to him, he understood the importance of the construction of a series in the various Cadre disciplines (47/2, 71/2 , 47/1) can be used successfully. He had approached the design on the basis of the principles .

Conti quickly moved to Toulouse , where an academy would later bear his name. It has been closed since December 10, 2011. Today only the “Le Conti” brewery in Toulouse pays tribute to his name!

He turned professional at the age of 19 and made his debut in Paris, where he caused a sensation by breaking the French records in 45/2 cadre. In the same year he took part in the "Pro" world championship in the USA and finished third. He was the only one who inflicted defeat on the winner Jacob Schaefer junior . On December 24, 1924 he was European champion in Cadre 45/2 with an overall average of 166.66 and a maximum series (HS) of 477. In 1933 Conti won the first professional world championship in Cadre 71/2 in the "Billard Palace" in Paris 11 wins and a general average (GD) of 40 and with an individual average (ED) of 150 (300 points in 2 shots), an HS of 272 points.

A painful attack of sciatica interrupted his career for a year, but shortly after his recovery he returned to world tournaments and won again.

From March 14th to 26th, 1938, a three-cushion world championship was held in the “Grand Hôtel de Paris”. Until then, the three-cushion world championships for professionals were dominated by the Americans. Roger Conti can beat the leading Americans Welker Cochran and Schaefer junior and becomes world champion with 14 match points. With a GD of 1.103 and an HS of 14, he also holds these tournament records, his best ED was 1.470. It was the last professional world championship that was held in three cushion.

The authors Zéno Bianu, Jean-Michel Varenne and Marc de Smect describe Conti's extraordinary skills and achievements in their book "L'Esprit des jeux" as follows:

“To give an idea of the mastery of the players, we need to mention the most marvelous game of billiards that history has ever made. The one who in 1946 in the “Salle Wagram” in Paris opposed the world champion Roger Conti, the Belgian professional François Glineur, with his technique without doubt the greatest player of all time. The Cadre 45/2 match was scheduled for 4,000 points, 400 points for each player for five days. Since the game began with reluctance, there was no evidence of a historical series. On the second day, Conti had finished his 400 distance with a series of 123. On the third day he made the 400 without a break and on the same evening, with an incomparable performance, he scored 400 more points, bringing the record to 923. On the fourth day, in front of a busy hall, he happily broke the 77 points that separate him from the 1000. As in a dream, he continued to 1215 points. "

- Zéno Bianu, Jean-Michel Varenne and Marc de Smect : L'Esprit des jeux

In 1955, during a game against Constant Côte (amateur world champion), played in Cadre 47/1 with a distance of 3000 points, he won with a GD of 58.82. A record that was hard to beat. The first player to achieve the 50th GD in Cadre 47/1 was his student Francis Connesson with 51.82 at 2100 points, in 1982 during a World Cup, but with composite balls and not with ivory balls (these wear out and become out of round in contrast to the modern compound balls).

He ended his career in 1956 with the sentence: "From the moment you do a little less well, you have to leave the stage".

His student Conneson tells of Conti's description of the game of billiards: “Billiards, the real, the only, pure combination of sport and art, skill, measure, knowledge and self-control, ardent determination, continuous training of muscles and brain, love of beauty execution of points and a sense of harmony in their order. "

Roger Conti died on the night of July 13-14, 1995.

The Conti system

Due to his studies in mechanics, but also his talent, he was able to further develop existing game systems, such as the "American series game" developed by the Canadian brothers, but also a previously unknown calculation system that is based on the diamonds in the bands to develop anew. This system, which was later named after him, is still current teaching material for learning three-cushion play . Conti wrote a book about it: Billiards for everyone - The discovery of the game of billiards , translated by his friend Albert Poensgen .
