The German three- cushion championships (DDM) have been held since 1929. The tournament has been held annually in Bad Wildungen , Hesse , since 2005 .
history
At the beginning of the 20th century, the carom disciplines free game and cadre still dominated international tournaments . That changed in the late 1920s, when the three-cushion became increasingly popular. In 1929, the three cushion found its way into tournaments on a national level. Even until the first years of the war (1942) regular tournaments were held. Then, due to the war, there was a break in play until 1947. In 1935 the era of the Düsseldorf series winner August Tiedtke began , who had the most wins to date (20). From 1935 to 1937 Erich Stoewe was the "Eternal Second" behind Tiedtke, like Tiedtke himself at the world championships. Tiedtke himself was not spared from the ideas loyal to the state. At the 1938 World Cup, he answered yes to a journalist's question whether he could imagine living in the USA and was then banned from the Reichssportführer Hans von Tschammer und Osten for two years. Because of its popularity and popularity, this ban, which was issued by the then association DABV , could not be maintained for long. On June 16, 1939, his eligibility to play was renewed and Tiedtke secured 16 more titles, a winning streak that has not been beaten to this day.
Tiedtke was the leading carambola player at the time and everyone had to sort themselves behind him. Only when Tiedtke did not take part in the tournament could other players win the title, as happened in 1955 when he played for the then still independent Saarland and was therefore not allowed to take part in the DDM. This DDM was part of a multiple event of all disciplines and was also part of the pentathlon competition . Like Stoewe before, Georg Berrisch became his successor. From 1939 to 1942 he was runner-up behind Tiedtke, only in 1941 he was third; This year the old master Otto Unshelm managed to win the title again. In 1947 his brother Gert, who was eleven years his junior, played for the first time and immediately came third. But his discipline was the art push and so he had to be content with the lower ranks.
After the annexation of Austria by the Nazi regime, the Austrian Franz Engl was able to take part in the championship in 1939 and 1941.
The DDM has been held annually since 1947. The only exceptions are the gaming seasons 1957/58 and 1996/97. In 1964/65 the DDM took place as part of a qualifying tournament for the European Championship in Vienna .
The general average rose steadily, but it was not until 1980 that Berlin's Dieter Müller crossed the “magic mark” of 1,000 (1.005) as the winner for the first time. The runner-up Günter Siebert even made it to 1.027.
From 1990 to 2012, among other things, the German Grand Prix (GGP) was a qualification tournament for participation in the DDM.
mode
In the first year of the tournament, 20 points were still played, but in the second edition in 1930 the distance was raised to the international level of 50 points. This stayed that way until 1959, when the international game distances were again adjusted and played to 60 points. This stayed that way until 1981, the only exception being the year 1975, when one switched to the set system for the first time and played on two winning sets (best of 3) of 20 points each with a break . A second attempt to play in the sentence system took place from 1981 to 1983, but there the game distance was increased to 25 points. Then again, until 1986, individual games were played to 50 points. In 1987 the sentence system finally prevailed, initially "Best of 3" and then from 1994 to "Best of 5". Since 2004 there has not been a “small final” (game for third place), so there are two third-placed players. A shot clock with 40 seconds has been available since 2008 .

Tournament statistics
In the first few years, the championships, with some exceptions being 1932, 1935 and 1959, were mostly played at the beginning of the year or at the end of the season. Since 1967 the DDM have been played at the end of the year, again with exceptions from 1991 to 1996 and 2004.
