The Austrian state championship three cushion also Austrian triband championship called (ÖDM), is a national tournament series in the Karambolagedisziplin three band . The winners are therefore also called "state champions".

history

Since 1932, with the exception of the war, the championship has been organized annually by the Austrian umbrella organization Billard Sportverband Österreich (BSVÖ), just one year after its establishment. Two so-called “Gau championships” were held in the “ Ostmark ” during the war years , but due to the modalities and conditions of participation, these could not be called the Austrian championship. As in the regular alignment cycle, the association was stable in the game modes.

Before the founding of the BSVÖ , the Austrian clubs, which at that time were still organized in the German Amateur Billiards Federation and formed District X , organized a championship in 1929/30 that can be seen as the forerunner of the Austrian State Championship.

Traditionally, the ÖDM is held at the beginning of the year (1st quarter), with some exceptions the tournament was held at the end of the previous year (1963, 1971–1974, 1976, 1982) or at the turn of the year (1950/51). In 1975, 1993, 1998, 2006 no championship was held.

Johann Scherz was the outstanding player over a period of 30 years (1950s to 1980s) who will remain unassailable with 28 gold medals in this discipline. In 1973 an ÖDM took place for the first time since 1953 without him and the gold medal went to Wolfgang Anreitter. In 1996, at the age of 64, he played his last ÖDM and ended his active career with a silver medal, losing 5-1 in the final against Franz Stenzel in extra time. In total, he won 35 medals at this state championship

Game modes

From 1932 to 2002 the game mode was played on 50 or 60 points (since 1959), and the games were partially adapted to the players' skill levels. Weaker players still had the goal of 50 points (starting in 1960). Following the international trend, there were adjustments, so from 1988 to 1990 and 1995 they played in the set system on three winning sets of 15 points each, before then in 2002 they bet entirely on the set system. By 1973 the number of participants was so low that only round robin mode (RRM) was played. In 1974, 12 players were allowed for the first time, so that it was then played in two groups, the final round with six players RRM. Since 1988, the group has been played in the knockout system with quarter-finals, semi-finals, finals and small finals (play for third place). In 2013, the BSVÖ followed the international trend and, like the three- cushion World Cup , moved away from the set system and switched to a match distance of 40 points.

In the beginning the field of participants was mostly a manageable 4–6 participants, and in 1988 there were 16 players, in 1991 there were 32 participants, until 2001 the number fluctuated between 10 and 27 players. Since 2002 the field of participants has been stable at 16 players.

The third place has not been played since the end of 2004 and two bronze medals are awarded.

Records

Franz Engl played a top series (HS) of 10 for the first time in 1953 , and it was he who broke through the “magic” limit of 1,000 in the individual average (ED) for the first time in 1948 with 1.020 . It was not until 1971 that Johann Scherz broke the limit of 2 with 2.068, which was only improved to 2.500 in 2007 by Gerhard Kostistansky . In 1959 Scherz played a general average (GD) over 1 for the first time with 1.079 , almost double that of Engl with 0.597. Until 1980 he remained the only player with a GD of 1+. Only then did Wolfgang Anreitter make it into this league with 1.005. Scherz increased the HS in 1959 to 12, then to 14 in 1969, this was discontinued by Wolfgang Anreitter in 1992 and Kostistansky in 2002. Only Andreas Efler was able to break Johann Scherz's almost 50-year-old record in 2018 with 17 points. That was a new ÖDM and Austrian record.
