Christian Beutler
Christian Beutler (born January 11, 1923 in Hamburg ; † March 1, 2003 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) was a German art historian .
life and work
He was the son of the Germanist and Goethe researcher Ernst Beutler . His sister was Gisela Beutler , Professor of Hispanic Studies at the Free University of Berlin . Beutler spent his youth in Frankfurt am Main and passed the Abitur at the local lessing grammar school there. During the Second World War he served as a radio operator in Bavaria and Italy. After the war he studied art history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1952 with a thesis on late Gothic panel painting in the work of Hans Holbein the Elder under Herbert von Eine . He then completed a traineeship at the Museum Schnütgen in Cologne under Hermann Schnitzler . In 1964 he received his habilitation with Harald Keller at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt with an investigation into "sculptures between antiquity and the Middle Ages".
Until 1971, Beutler taught at the Chair of Art History at the University of Frankfurt. In the same year he received a professorship for art history at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. In 1988 he returned to Frankfurt.
In his work, Beutler explored the resurgence or continued existence of monumental, free-standing sculpture since the end of antiquity on the basis of the accessible monuments; an undertaking that looked for answers in the area of the early medieval image cult and its ruling and theological orientation and was initially received by the majority of researchers with skepticism. Among his particular merits is the discovery and description of Carolingian sculpture .
He later made numerous studies on architecture, sculpture and painting in France and especially Paris before and after 1789 . The art guide he wrote “Paris and Versailles” (Stuttgart 1970) established a new perspective on the historical monuments of the 19th century.
The subjects of his courses ranged from Carolingian art to the then little-noticed French sculpture of the 19th century.
After his retirement he oversaw the publication of numerous Goethe editions and was involved in the board of trustees of the Free German Hochstift .
The tomb of the Beutler family is located in the Frankfurt main cemetery .
