Ernst Beutler (born April 12, 1885 in Reichenbach im Vogtland ; † November 8, 1960 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German literary historian and Goethe researcher .

Life

Ernst Beutler attended grammar school in Altenburg and studied from 1904 to 1911 at the universities of Tübingen and Leipzig . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Leipzig . As a librarian at the Hamburg State and University Library from 1912 to 1925, he specialized in the manuscript department. In 1925 he completed his habilitation at the University of Hamburg with research on early humanist comedy. On October 1, 1925, he was appointed director of the Free German Hochstift and head of the Goethe Museum . In 1927 he also accepted a teaching position at the University of Frankfurt , which he lost in 1937 because of his marriage to a Jewish woman.

Beutler was one of the four co-founders of the Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt and has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 1930. He was responsible for setting up the Goethe Museum in 1932. In addition, he saved the library, the inventory and several documents of the Goethe House during the Second World War by moving them to a total of 18 locations with a few employees. This enabled the house to be rebuilt in a historically accurate way after it was destroyed by a bomb attack on March 22, 1944.

Beutler became a full professor at the University of Frankfurt in 1946 and published numerous works, including his 24-volume Goethe edition ( Artemis commemorative edition ) from 1948 to 1954. One of his best-known students was Peter Boerner . In 1960, Beutler received the Goethe Prize from the city of Frankfurt for his "extraordinary services to the Goethean spirit". Since 1954 he was a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry .
