Peter Boerner

Peter Boerner (born March 10, 1926 in Tartu , Estonia ; † June 12, 2015 in Bloomington , Indiana , United States ) was a German-American literary scholar, best known as a Goethe researcher .

Live and act

Peter Boerner attended the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Göttingen and the Lessing-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main. After the Second World War he studied German and comparative literature , art history and anthropology at the University of Frankfurt am Main . In 1954, he was with Ernst Beutler with the work of Goethe's diary of the years 1776 to 1782 to the Dr. phil. PhD . In 1955 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the College of Europe in Bruges . He then was curator at the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf and from 1958 director of the Stanford University Study Center in Beutelsbach .

In 1961 he went to the United States . He was Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin – Madison (1961 to 1964 and 1966 to 1971) and at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1964 to 1966). 1970/1971 he was a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation . From 1971 he held a chair for German literature at Indiana University Bloomington . He was visiting professor at the University of Michigan (1967), Middlebury College (1968) and Yale University (1978). In 1995 he retired .

After his retirement he will continue his research. On his mother's side, he was related to Wilhelmine Schwenke (1780–1871), the servant and companion of Caroline von Woliehen . As a result, a part of the estate of Caroline von Wolzo fell to him, which enabled him to carry out further research on her literary work and to publish her collected writings . He donated Caroline von Wolhaben's thought books to the Lilly Library at Indiana University, which specializes in rare books and manuscripts. He donated parts of his collections to the Free German Hochstift in Frankfurt am Main and the Goethe Museum Frankfurt am Main .

Peter Boerner was a member of the Rotary Club of Bloomington North. He was an avid recreational athlete in order to maintain his physical health. For his swimming activities received the Emeritus Award from Indiana University.

Peter Boerner was born in 1959 with the specialist librarian and translator Nancy Boerner. Sanden married and had three sons. In 2017 Nancy Boerner and Renate Boerner-Manz, a sister of Peter Boerner, visited the Schillerhaus in Rudolstadt , to which Peter Boerner had given some pieces from the estate of Caroline von Wolnahm.

In 2016 the first "Peter Boerner Memorial Faust Lecture" took place at Indiana University Bloomington.

Peter Boerner's best-known work is the biography of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , which was published in 35 editions, several paperback editions and as an e-book and has been translated into ten languages. He published several catalogs of works by Goethe, including the 45-volume dtv complete edition.
