Over the next two hundred years, the house changed hands several times. It has been owned by the city of Rudolstadt since 1996. Between 2005 and 2009 the building was completely renovated and expanded into a museum. The museum was opened on May 9, 2009, the 204th anniversary of Schiller's death. In 2011 the city of Rudolstadt was honored with the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize for the renovation of the Schiller House. The museum management was taken over by the Kranichfelder author Daniela Danz in 2013 .
