Literature Museum

Scottish Writers' Museum in Edinburgh

A literature museum collects, maintains and presents testimonials about authors of literary life, literary topics and literary productions. Such museums are often located in a former place of residence and work of an author, which, if it has been preserved as a whole or in parts, can become a museum object itself. Collections from collectors or certain libraries can also be the starting point for establishing a literature museum.

Related terms

A literary museum that only consists of a single room is usually referred to as a "literary memorial" or "literary memorial room".

Thematic breadth

As a rule, literary museums are dedicated to individual, sometimes to several, writers.

Choice of location

A distinction is made between internal and external literary museums depending on whether or not a writer lived (or stayed) in the building in question. Decisive for the choice of the location of a literature museum are among other things

  • the space required for the exhibition (including accompanying infrastructure),
  • the number of visitors,
  • the access routes and parking facilities as well
  • the ownership structure of the building.

The Dublin Writers Museum, on the other hand, provides an overview of the entire history of Irish literature and thus has a much wider perspective than its counterpart in Edinburgh. @1@ 2Template: Webachiv / IABot / www.edinburgh.gov.uk
