The Dublin Writers Museum is a literary museum of the Republic of Ireland in the capital Dublin .

history

The idea of a Writers Museum was formulated by the Irish journalist and director of the national broadcaster  Raidió Teilifís Éireann Maurice Gorham (1902–1975) long before his death. The museum was established to stimulate interest by collecting works and documents on activities in Irish literature as a whole and to present the life and work of individual Irish writers.

The museum opened in November 1991. It is located across from the Garden of Remembrance , in a listed Georgian-style building from the early 18th century on Parnell Square North, close to the Abbey Presbyterian Church in Dublin.

The Dublin Writers Museum today provides an overview of the entire history of Irish literature. The museum rooms house several libraries , galleries and the administration area. Next to the library in the basement there is the salon and the gallery of famous writers with their portraits and busts. This room is also used for receptions, special exhibitions and special occasions. A staircase leads to the exhibition rooms on the first floor. There are temporary exhibitions shown. Another adjoining room is dedicated to children's literature . There is a bookshop and restaurant on the ground floor.

Through the collaboration with the Irish Writers Center, the Dublin Writers Museum also offers an overview of the work of living writers and the international literary scene associated with them. At the national level it is the center of Irish literary history and is complemented by works such as  George Bernard ShawWilliam Butler Yeats , Austin Clarke and  Patrick Pearse . The authors featured in the museum are mainly those who have made an important contribution to Irish or international literature.

Among the foundations there are some items personally owned by Irish writers such as the Lady Gregory , Austin Clarke's desk, Samuel Beckett's telephone, Mary Josephine Lavins teddy bear, Oliver Gogarty's awards (who was in turn born in 1878 within sight of the present museum in what is now Parnell Square East ) and Brendan Behan's union card, complete with fingerprints. There are also old typewriters , equipment, hand-held notes and other manuscripts by former writers.
