The German Three Cushion Championship 1974/75 (DDM) was the 41st edition of this tournament series and took place from September 6th to 8th, 1974 in Solingen .
history
After the years 1932, 1947 and 1948 it was the fourth DDM to be held in Solingen. Before and after the war, Solingen was a billiards stronghold. Otto Unshelm from "Solingen BC 20" was the star of the early years, he won 1932-1935 and 1941. This championship was held for the second time after 1973 in the "Spielmann system" (see mode). Siegfried Spielmann himself did not take part in third place last year and made room for Hans-Dietrich Runkehl.
The minstrel system certainly had its weaknesses, but otherwise a 12-player tournament on three tables with 25 games to be played in three days could not be mastered (total playing time: 23 hours).
The event received a lot of media attention as part of the 600th anniversary of the city of Solingen in the Klingenhalle . The WDR reported as part of its program “Between the Rhine and Ruhr”, the ZDF broadcast excerpts in the current sports studio and the finale in the sports report . For the first time, the organizers and organizers were affected by the advertising spectacle of the media. In order to be able to broadcast the pictures, also in the neighboring countries of the Netherlands and Belgium, the perimeter advertising had to be removed, a great loss for the organizers.
mode
The players were divided into three groups of four players each (VR). During the entire tournament, the game was played to 60 points with an additional kick and no admission limit. The two group best came into the intermediate round (ZR). There were three pairings , ranked according to the general average (GD). The two GD-best winners and the GD-best loser then made it to the semifinals, then the final and the small final. This form of alignment is also known as the “minstrel system”.
Grouping
The initial ranking was based on the player performance of the season so far.

Tournament course
Preliminary round
Group 1
The first group encounter started with a big surprise. Defending champion Dieter Müller lost his game against bottom of the table Donnert from Saarlouis with 40:60. In the game, Donnert also produced the tournament record in the highest series (HS) with 9 points in the 4th shot , the Berliner never had a real chance of victory at any time during the game. The best individual average (ED) set up by Donnert of 0.983, which he later repeated, he was able to hold until the penultimate game.
Schüssler won against Otto Gegenfurtner 60:39 in 75 shots and thus set his best individual average (BED) with 0.800. Müller now had to win against Schüssler if he didn't want to be eliminated in the preliminary round. He won the match after 65 shots with 60:50. Apparently Donnert had let his surprise win against Müller be reckless and so he lost his game against Bayern representative Otto Gegenfurtner with 50:60 in long 107 shots. Gegenfurter then lost his match against Müller with 50:60 in 78 shots and so Schüssler had to win if he wanted to advance one round against Donnert, but missed his goal with 38:60 in a hapless game.

Group 2
In this group the veteran old master and seven-time German champions Ernst Rudolph and Günter Siebert were the favorites. While Siebert lived up to his role and won all his matches (Kimmeskamp: 60:47 in 92; Runkehl: 60:35 in 66; Rudolph: 60:44 in 68), Rudolph was only able to beat Runkehl with 60:31 in 73 win, but the game against Kimmeskamp was clearly lost with 32:60 in 70. Runkehl won with 60:56 in 83 against Kimmeskamp. After a tie, the GD had to decide on the placement for the group runner-up. The minimal difference of 21 ‰ was in favor of Kimmeskamp, who went one lap with Siebert.

Group 3
In contrast to the other groups, this was balanced in terms of the skill level of the participants. Therefore, the results were close or happy. As usual calmly, Bücken lost his first match against Tiedke in 86 shots with 53:60. Jürgen Meissburger, who was well-known from the previous year, happily won 60:59 against Apelt. But then he disappointed with 38:60 against Joseph Bücken and spoiled his entry into the intermediate round (ZR). Apelt also had no luck in the second game and lost, again just under, in 82 shots with 58:60 against Tiedke. Bücken also won his second match with just 60:59 in 104 shots against Apelt, who became the unlucky person of the tournament. In the end Jürgen Meissburger won against Tiedke in 86 shots with 60:53. Again, the GD decided on the placement, but this time with the first three, and the move into the intermediate round.

Siebert and Müller clearly won their games and Tiedtke advanced as the average best. The Saarlander Thunder with the best ED of this round had turned out to be the favorite scare, Paul Kimmeskamp and Joseph Bücken were eliminated.

Final rounds
Semifinals
The following pairings emerged from the ranking: Günter Siebert vs. Gert Tiedtke and Dieter Müller vs. Peter Thunders. The defending champion had a chance to take revenge for his defeat in the preliminary round against Donnert. He showed his skills, Donnert did not get into the game and lost by a large margin. Günter Siebert, so far the only player without a game loss, also did not get into the game, played slowly against a relaxed-looking Gert Tiedtke, who then won the game by a clear margin. So Donnert and Siebert played for 3rd place and Müller had the chance to defend his title against Tiedke.

Small finale
In the game for 3rd place, Peter Donnert seemed recovered from the intermediate round, while his opponent had lost all vigor from the preliminary rounds. Donnert finished his last game with 60:58, but Siebert managed the necessary points for a draw in the second strike. A shootout did not exist, again DG decided on the placement and because Siebert had in turn by his previous victories in the lead. Donnert finished last with a good 4th place. As 11th of the previous year he made it to the top.

In the game for the championship title, the Berlin miller again showed his skills to an enthusiastic audience. He didn't give Cologne Tiedtke a chance and after 57 shots turned his match point to a 60:38 victory, not only defending his title, but also winning the 11th German championship title. He was the only player to complete the tournament with an ED of 1,052.
