Lode Castle ( Estonian Koluvere piiskopilinnus or Koluvere piiskopilinnus ) in Koluvere in the Lääne County , Estonia , (German: Wiek District) was a bishop's castle of the Ösel-Wiek diocese .

history

Drawing of the ruins (1842)

In 1228 the diocese of Ösel-Wiek was founded, the center of which was Leal . Northern Estonia was heavily disputed among Swedes, Danish knights and the vassals of the Bishop of Ösel-Wiek. A vassal of the bishop, Lode, probably built a first castle on the site of the current complex.

Today's castle is documented for the time of Bishop Winrich von Kniprode (1383–1419). In 1783 the Russian Empress Catherine II bought the castle for the Württemberg Princess Augusta Carolina, who is buried in the church of Kullamaa . In 1840 the buildings fell in ruins after a fire.

During the uprisings of 1905, the main complex of the castle was burned, but then restored. From 1924 a school was housed in the castle, from 1963 a nursing home. In 2005 the castle came into private ownership.

Building

The castle was built on an island surrounded by the Loe brook and had four expanded wings, a wide round corner tower facing west and a square tower next to the main gate.
